Deborah Fallows

Amid pandemic gloom, The Friends of the Pasadena Public Library found a fine way to honor the organization’s 45th anniversary . . . virtually. Deborah Fallows, the engaging author and speaker, joined members via Zoom to describe her public library adventures as she and her husband, James Fallows, crisscrossed the country to research their best-selling book, Our Towns: A 100,000 Mile Journey Into the Heart of America. The HBO documentary “Our Towns,” premiering on April 23, 2021, is based on the Fallows’ book.

Fallows, speaking from her Washington, D.C. home on Dec. 5, was introduced by The Friends’ president Andrea Williams and interviewed by Jon Thurber, board member and former book editor of The Los Angeles Times. The audience had an opportunity to submit questions. Fallows shared anecdotes about the inventive ways some libraries are serving their communities.
