Our Mission

Our mission is to support the library’s programs, special services and cultural events. Priority is given to projects that instill the excitement of discovery and the love of reading in library patrons of all ages.

What we do

The Friends of the Pasadena Public Library have been active vigorous supporters of Library programs and services across our beautiful community for 50 years. We hope you will join us as we continue to fund innovative ways to engage readers, advocate for full funding for our libraries, and support a love of reading and discovery in 21st century Pasadena.

Central Library stands as the cornerstone of the Pasadena Public Library, offering vital support to its nine branch libraries. In May 2021, our Central Library temporarily closed following a structural assessment that uncovered its susceptibility to seismic activity due to unreinforced masonry.

Today, as we commemorate the rich history of our libraries spanning 140 years, discover more about the future of the Central Library, the necessary earthquake retrofit, and the significant contributions it is poised to make in the 21st century.

The idea of getting a community together to discuss a single book actually arose in Seattle and quickly spread across the US, coming to Pasadena in 2002. Since beginning, the Pasadena Public Library has hosted 13 titles and with each presentation the list of collaborating organizations, firms, volunteers, and businesses grows.

From March 2nd to April 30th, Hastings Branch welcomes Christine Han, a 38-year-old Los Angeles based artist who works at Santa Catalina Branch Library, with a captivating exhibit that redefines the boundaries of your everyday environment.

Christine’s work continuously explores the overlooked, transforming obstructed windows and vents into portals of possibility. Her masterful use of color and abstraction, along with her focus on form, each play a vital role in creating something recognizable yet strangely new.

Join our dedicated community of volunteers and make a profound impact on literacy, education, and community engagement. Whether you’re shelving books, organizing events, or promoting literacy initiatives, your contribution fuels our mission to support and enhance our local public library.

Together, let’s ignite a love for reading and learning in our community. Become a volunteer today and be the catalyst for positive change with Friends of the Public Library.
